Projects to Finish
I've been knitting a lot lately, but not necessarily *finishing* projects. It's all those ends I have to weave in! Ugh! I just need a night in front of the TV with something mindless on in the background (Dave's football games?) so I can sit there and get it done.
I gave up on my recycled "Lazy Daisy" yarn becoming a complete bib and burp rag set and settled for a cute pair of dishrags instead. I wanted to try a new pattern, so I'm starting one of my recent WalMart yarn purchases as a set of dishrags in a pattern called "Chinese Waves."
I'm up to seven pregnant friends due in the first half of 2011, so I've been a baby bib knitting machine! I haven't woven in the ends on any yet, but I have two completely knit bibs, one missing the second strap, and I just started bib #4 last night (another one of my WalMart yarns). At some point in time I'll have to start all of the matching burp rags (even though knitting the bibs is so much more fun!)

Fall Flowers
HistoryDiva dropped by last night to pick up the decorations from her party.

Surprise!
Kristine's birthday was almost two weeks ago, but her super-secret surprise party was yesterday. Aimee, Robin, Allison, and I had been planning this Austen-esque birthday tea party for months!
I was in charge of keeping the birthday girl occupied while Robin and Aimee set up (with help from Dave) and the other guests arrived. We planned the surprise to coincide with PINS, our monthly cross stitch group. Kristine was driving me home after PINS, and I suggested a field trip to the new Michael's so I could get a hostess gift for Julie, who was having her Halloween party later that night. Meanwhile, Kristine found some new ornaments for the DivaStan neon pink Christmas tree. We then had to stop by her apartment, where I bothered Midget (see picture 1) and she dug out a stash of yarn she wasn't using to give to me (see picture 2).
Aunt Jean's van parked next door almost blew the surprise, but it puzzled Kristine more than anything while I did my best to play dumb (and to avoid eye contact because I cannot lie well...) While she was more closely inspecting the van, I had the door to the house open and could hear the hiding guests giggling... Somehow I managed to not give anything away until Kristine got into the house and everyone jumped out to yell "Surprise!"
This morning, all that was left of the party were Kristine's flowers (picture 3) and a bunch of balloons tied to the bathroom doorknob (picture 4). I have to say that the party was a major success, especially since we managed to pull off the "surprise" part!
Yay for free yarn!

Beware of Yarn
I had planned to go to Michael's after work today to browse through their cotton yarns, but instead I got sucked in by the Peaches & Creme selection at WalMart...
At least now I'm ready to knit for two birthdays and a baby shower!

Book Cozy
At the beginning of the year, I posted an unidentified knitting project. Ten months later, I have finally stitched together an adorable book cozy made out of remnant cotton yarn with a cute yellow bunny button to keep it closed. It was modeled on a book cozy that is almost twenty years old--my sixth grade teacher made cozies for our entire class with our initials on them, and I still use mine to tote paperbacks around in my purse (currently Pride and Prejudice...).
The lucky recipient of this one-of-a-kind cozy (with a new book inside for her library, of course!) is my favorite friend born on October 11th, HistoryDiva!

Something's Missing
Dave came home from work tonight to find me playing in the dirt. I proudly pointed to an empty patch that previously had been occupied by a half-dead bush. He couldn't believe that I'd removed it myself (so I reminded him that this isn't the first time I've uprooted bushes in my front yard...)
All of the mutilated branches now form a pile on the back porch twice as big as the bush I ripped up. And yard waste recycling isn't until the end of the month--bad timing on my part. But we don't use our back porch, so the pile can stay there as long as it needs to!
While I was motivated (and already dirty and sweaty), I also removed the ancient pine straw from around my azaleas, added some fresh topsoil, and replaced the pine straw with cypress mulch. Eventually I would like to have cypress mulch in all of the flower beds visible from the street. We'll see if that happens before the cold weather returns...

Another Austen Update
Out of the four books I am supposed to read for the Jane Austen Challenge, I have now finished three!
I blogged back in July that I had finished Mansfied Park and was thinking about changing the Austen spin-offs I had originally chosen. Last month I read Edmund Bertram's Diary (and passed it on to Robin, who roped me into this challenge in the first place!) then decided to go for the only other Mansfield Park spin-off I've been able to locate: Mansfield Park Revisited (original title, no?)
Now I have started the final book of the challenge, Pride & Prejudice. I may just finish this thing before time is up!
